Growth of research publishing activity in Africa

SouthAfricanJournalofAccountingResearchAfrica-greenJournals publishing activity is on the upswing in Africa. A 2014 study showed 94 Open Access repositories in Africa. Similarly, African journal content is becoming more discoverable as a result of databases like the African Journals Online (AJOL) database.

Editorial Manager adds the African Journal of Traditional, Complementary and Alternative Medicines, Southern African Journal of Infectious Diseases, as well as South African Journal of Accounting Research to the list of African journals using EM.

NIH Export – ProduXion Manager

PM_dot_onlyNIH-logoProduXion Manager includes functionality that allows users to configure a production task to automate export of manuscript files to repositories, such as National Institutes of Health.

Increasingly, authors receiving funding from organizations like the NIH are required to deposit their work, and this simple configuration can save production staff time, and give researchers considerable peace of mind.

Keeping connected: Clinical trials

shutterstock_231530770When it comes to clinical trials, it can be difficult to track down related content. Not all journals publish the trial ID in the body of the article; therefore, although a results article may cite a published protocol, there is nothing to connect that article to subsequent publications. And nothing to link from the protocol to the results article.

It was in pursuit of this ambition that, in partnership with Crossref, BioMed Central called a cross-publisher meeting to discuss how to build on the well-established digital-object identifier (DOI) and the more recent CrossMark tool to achieve the threaded publication concept. Look for an update on this topic from Crossref and EM customer BioMed Central in early 2016!

Botanical Society of America collects funder information in Editorial Manager

APS-JournalCoverAJB-JournalCoverEditorial Manager customer Botanical Society of America’s journals  American Journal of Botany (AJB) and Applications in Plant Biology (APPS) recently began using EM to collect funder information. Collecting funding details can be useful in many ways including compliance reporting and more.

“We are eager to help our authors– our biggest stakeholders–comply with funder mandates by implementing the collection of funding information,” says Amy McPherson, Director of Publications for the Botanical Society of America. “This aligns with our strategy of making an increasingly complex world of publication a little easier for our authors, and Aries has worked hard to make this process seamless.”

Singapore in the Spring: Sign up to attend ISMTE’s Asian Conference

Tony AlvesISMTE-logoIt may be months away, but Aries’ Director of Product Management Tony Alves is already thinking about spring!

That’s because he’ll be traveling to Singapore to participate in ISMTE’s Asian Conference 2016.

“This is the first time ISMTE has held a meeting in the region,” said Alves. “With more and more publishing activity happening in Asia, it is a natural fit for ISMTE to harness the enthusiasm, innovation and collaboration with this kind of event.”
Tony will be moderating a panel focused on “Emerging Standards as Best Practices in Scholarly Publishing” at the conference. “Understanding and utilizing standards, such as ORCID, FundRef, and CRediT, is important to STM publishing worldwide,” said Alves. “It is of particular utility in parts of the world where different character sets are used and where author and contributor names might be similar or unfamiliar to western publishers. Adopting these emerging standards helps the exchange of information and data.”

Tony is a member of the ISMTE Industry Advisory Board, and Aries is a proud sponsor of the ISMTE Asian Conference. Learn more about the meeting.

Editor substitution in 12.2

In version 12.2, currently in early deployment, editorial offices can swap one editor for another, without disrupting the rest of the configured multi-editor chain. Not sure what “editor chains” are? Check out this month’s “did you know?” below.

Did You Know? You can automate your editor chain

Save time in your editorial office by assigning several editors at once!

editor-chain-screenshot
Default editor chains can be configured by article type. This results in a big time saving because with a single click journal staff can assign manuscripts to a chain of several editors (e.g. Editor in Chief, Section Editor and Academic Editor). Selections and letter text can be modified on-the-fly if needed for a particular manuscript.
