Did you know? EM Discussion Forums add a new dimension to editorial communication

Question-markDiscussion Forums, an innovative EM feature, has recently attracted positive journal feedback. Allowing informal discussions between Editors about a particular submission, the forums can be set up at any time during the workflow.

Among benefits customer have found are: it is a natural solution for journals requiring a quick initial accept or reject decision without adding Editors to the decision chain, it is especially helpful for workflows involving collaborative decision-making, it allows subject-area experts to be easily brought in, the discussion remains in the system for handy reference – and it is simple to use!

Supporting ChemDraw in Editorial Manager

ChemDraw-screenshotChemDraw, developed by CambridgeSoft, creates correct chemical structure images from chemical names, and gives IUPAC names for structures. When an author submits a manuscript as a Word document with ChemDraw files embedded, Editorial Manager automatically converts the submission to a PDF file.

Alternatively, native ChemDraw files outside of Word can also be uploaded into EM, however, they are not converted to PDF. They are stored in the “file inventory” for convenient download by clicking links in the PDF.

Version 8.2 went to general release in June

v8.2After beta testing and gamma deployment over the past few months, Aries Systems is pleased to report the second major release of Editorial Manager and Preprint Manager in 2011.

Version 8.2 integrates many useful features, such as:

  • more customization of manuscript PDF cover page for a comprehensive metadata summary sheet, with multiple configurable layouts
  • ability to attach files (from within EM or from a local computer) to ad hoc emails
  • automated editor reminders which now permit journals to send, in a single email, categorized summaries of assignments with assignment counts and days outstanding

As usual, the upgrades do not require any system downtime to deploy, and are performed incrementally to minimize user disruption. If you would like to be notified of launches for your journal and receive a copy of the release notes, please contact Aries’ Customer Service Department.

Public Library of Science reports substantial growth in publication

PLoS-One-GraphPLoS ONE is a peer-reviewed, open-access online publication which welcomes reports on primary research from any scientific discipline.

At the Society for Scholarly Publishing’s Annual Meeting in June 2011, PLoS ONE reported substantially increasing number of article publications in each quarter (see chart) since July 2010. The number of submissions received by PLoS ONE from 1/1/2011 to 6/30/2011 was more than 1.5 times greater than the number of submissions from 7/1/2010 to 12/31/2010.
