Did you know? The Production Status Grid is PM’s intelligence headquarters

Question-markPreprint Manager’s Production Status Grid presents vital information about the production workflow to journal staff, all in an easy-to-read format and in a central location.

Used by production and editorial staff, the grid can be compared to traditional whiteboards or spreadsheets historically used for the same purpose. However, the grid displays a comprehensive view of manuscript progress updated in real time as tasks are assigned and completed, and access is shared by authorized staff from any location via the Web.

Aries Systems commits to JATS

Aries Systems announces its commitment to supporting the JATS standardbecause of its growing adoption outside bio-medicine and its extended support for international author name formats. Richard Wynne, VP Sales and Marketing at Aries commented, “Our business partner in Japan, Atlas Corporation, has been active in the JATS process to ensure its applicability to Japanese publishing. By supporting JATS format transmittals we can better serve Editorial Manager journals.”

The Journal Article Tag Suite (JATS), arising from an NCBI project, is an XML standard that builds on the earlier National Library of Medicine DTDs for scholarly manuscript archiving.

Dartmouth Journal Services, Aries Systems, and the NLM DTD

header-dartmouth-journal-servicesDartmouth Journal Services (DJS), a division of The Sheridan Group, is a leading provider of editorial, composition, and content conversion services to the scientific, technical, medical, and scholarly journal community. Many of their customers also use workflow solutions from Aries Systems. This means that Aries and DJS frequently exchange files and metadata during manuscript workflow for our mutual customers.

Working together, the companies have successfully implemented automated, system-to-system transfer using the NLM DTD standard and this provides an integrated working platform for journals that use the services of both companies.

Mike Hepp, Senior Technology Strategist at DJS said, “Automated transfer of metadata between Aries and DJS works extremely well using the NLM DTD. This increases both the efficiency of the workflow and the accuracy of data in the system which results in less cost and higher quality for ourselves and our mutual customers.”

AMS journals’ production processes flow smoothly with Preprint Manager

AMS-LogoThe American Meteorological Society (AMS) produces ten journals plus the organization’s membership magazine, all of which use Aries’ web-based production tracking and workflow system.

Journals Production Manager Mike Friedman, Ph.D. commented, “The decision to switch from an in-house system to Aries solutions emerged after it became clear that continued investing in development and support of the former, which had become unreliable and difficult to efficiently maintain, would be unduly burdensome to the AMS. Since the change of systems in summer of 2010, Preprint Manager has allowed better visibility of manuscript status and control over tasks, ultimately leading to a more efficient process and reduced journal production times.”

To find out about the AMS, visit their web site and their EM and PM site for Journal of Hydrometeorology.
