Peer Review Week (PRW) is a virtual, community-led celebration designed to discuss specific topics related to current trends, advancements, challenges, and opportunities in publishing. Each year is dedicated to a unique theme, with recent years sparking conversations on integrity, technology, diversity, transparency, and quality in peer review. As we prepare to host the eleventh annual event on September 15-19, the PRW Steering Committee surveyed the global publishing ecosystem to make their voice heard in the selection of the 2025 theme. With nearly 900 votes received, the community has spoken! The Steering Committee recently announced the winning theme – Rethinking Peer Review in the AI Era!

This comes at no surprise, as artificial intelligence (AI) and large language models (LLMs) have been at the forefront of scholarly discussion and controversy in recent years. As the publishing landscape continues to navigate the risks and rewards of AI’s impact on our workflows and research output, PRW 2025 will serve as an additional platform for candid conversation on AI potential and controversy. Many AI-based innovations and policies have been introduced in response to this new smarter digital age – but the discourse on their use and effectiveness continues to evolve as new standards or integrity threats arise. The PRW Steering Committee recognizes that AI plays a larger role in the publishing lifecycle beyond just peer review itself, and encourages the research community to explore and reflect on all facets of this current climate that is both technically and ethically challenging.
