Default editor chains can be configured by article type. This results in big time savings because, with a single click, journal staff can assign manuscripts to a chain of several editors (e.g. Editor in Chief, Section Editor and Academic Editor). Selections and letter text can be modified on-the-fly, if needed, for a particular manuscript.
Just heard that one of the editors in the chain assigned to a manuscript is on sabbatical? Not a problem, substituting editors requires only a single click, and is not disruptive to the rest of the configured multi-editor chain.
These are just a couple examples of the smart features included in version 12.2.
