Inflection Point: Setting the Course… to SSP 2024!

The Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP) will host their 46th annual meeting in Boston, MA from May 29-31. The theme, “Inflection Point: Setting the Course for the Future of Scholarly Communication,” spotlights the pivotal era our industry finds itself and how the decisions made now will determine the value we deliver and values we reflect as a community. The scholarly publishing and global research landscape is vastly transforming due to growing “disruptors” to existing processes and infrastructure, such as increased submissions, evolving open access (OS) models, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) priorities, and artificial intelligence (AI) innovations. In an age of change and growth, SSP 2024 brings together academics, funders, librarians, publishers, service providers, researchers, and more to discuss these challenges and opportunities.

SSP is a staple on the Aries’ event calendar! As such, we are pleased to be a Generations Fund sponsor for this year’s conference! Each year, SSP awards fellowships to early career professionals, those from under-served communities, and students of publishing, librarianship, and information service. The program provides annual membership to fellows, educational seminars, mentoring, and travel. Aries will also be exhibiting at SSP 2024 – stop by booth #307 to connect with our team!

Additionally, Aries Systems will be featured as a panelist during the Previews Session on the final morning of the conference – Friday, May 31. As a lightning round-style plenary, the Previews Session spotlights the latest solutions and content in the industry and allows attendees to vote for “Best Innovation.” Aries’ Business Development Manager, Travis Hewgley, will be presenting Invite Reviewers with Confidence: Transforming the Candidate Search and Screening Experience. Stop by to our showcase to learn more about our recent partnership and integration and Scopus to deliver an advanced Reviewer search solution.

Invite Reviewers with Confidence: Transforming the Candidate Search and Screening Experience

Previews Session | Friday, May 31 | 9:00am – 10:15am

Locating, screening, and securing qualified and available peer reviewers is a common challenge for publishers, and usually highly manual. While many journals possess their own pool of candidates, it is often overburdened, lacks diverse representation, limited in scope and capacity, and high risk for potential conflicting interests. As such, journals are increasingly relying on third-party researcher databases and search tools to expand their network and minimize this bottleneck in workflow. With this, however, they are often left with rigid systems that offer little visibility into the researcher’s background and may be subject to bias if based on AI algorithms. This introduces several risks, including decreased engagement from Reviewers, frustrating delays in publication lifecycles for Authors/Editors, and compromised review/research quality.

This session will highlight an exciting new solution that delivers a more efficient, impartial, and data-driven approach to the Reviewer search and invitation process. Aries Systems and Scopus have partnered to integrate Find Reviewers using Scopus, a Reviewer matching service, with Editorial Manager (EM), the leading peer review tracking system. This powerful solution offers publishers unparalleled coverage, enhanced diversification, and comprehensive insights for in-depth analysis. Due to the seamlessness of the integration, the dynamic and flexible search engine automatically leverages key metadata from within EM, such as keywords, classifications, and Reviewers invited through other search sources. It also comes equipped with advanced COI detection capabilities, streamlining the screening process. Through this intuitive integration, publishers can experience reduced administrative burdens, fewer delays to publication, and confidence in their Reviewer selections.
