Reference processing can be an expensive bottleneck in the publishing workflow. Publishers report that a high percentage of Author revisions are due to reference corrections. Additionally, composition vendors spend up to 16% of their time fixing references. Reference errors can be found in nearly half of publisher’s manuscripts despite these preemptive efforts.
In an attempt to address this issue, publishers may require that Authors use specific manuscript templates and expensive bibliographic management software or complex plug-ins. This may be inconvenient, as Authors typically prefer to focus on the quality of their manuscript content rather than on bibliographic formatting. Did you know that Editorial Manager offers an automated Reference Checking solution to clean up and validate bibliographic references?
During Author submission, eXtyles reference processing tools integrated within Editorial Manager automatically extract unformatted bibliographic metadata and use heuristics to analyze, peel apart, and restructure these references. No pre-formatting required!
To validate citations, reference elements (such as article type, Author name, volume, issue, etc.) are tagged in clean, structured XML and are used to query external databases such as PubMed® and Crossref® behind the scenes. Even if the Author has omitted data or used non-standard journal abbreviations, a successful match from an external database is made in most cases.
Editorial Manager’s Reference Checking streamlines the entire reference validation process. This innovative solution saves Authors and Editors time and money spent revising references and complying with bibliographic templates. The Editor and Reviewer experience may also be enhanced by quick access to the cited material thanks to hyperlinked references.
